THE PROGRESS OF SPRING - 2006
2006, March 23 Mary is happy to announce that the crocus are open. Not too far off last year
but a bit later. Not surprising given the surprise snow we got the week before.
2005, March 19 Mary is happy to announce that the crocus are just beginning to open and
will soon look like the picture below taken in the Spring of 2004!

2006 24 March - the first skunk cabbage are beginning to appear. This year I will investigate "hearts of palm"
26 Apr 06 - The creek is filled with skunk cabbage and the aroma fills the air. It has come to mean
spring for me.
2005 - The skunk cabbage are now in full bloom everywhere. I have yet to confirm it, but I heard
hearts of palm come from the skunk cabbage.
2004 - Next to appear were these beautiful flowers. I am told that in Europe and the U.K. they are
sold for planting in marshy areas and are held in greater esteem than this area where they go by
the name "skunk cabbage." After the white, white, white of the snows of the winter, their
cheerful yellow was a sight for sore eyes.

After the skunk cabbage came a few intrepid daffodils and a few adventurous magnolia
blossoms.

26 April 2006 Today the forsythia and daffodils are in full bloom. The happy yellow lifts one's spirits!
26 Apr 2006 The magnolia are just beginning to bloom.
2005 - Today is April 22 and the magnolia are a little slower than last year. We only have a few
at the top. Last week we were still pretty chilly at night.

26 April 2006 Our nights are still quite cool, but the days are glorious. The cherry and plum are
not yet in bloom.
Today is the 22 of April 2004 and there is color everywhere. These cherry blossoms appear to
promise a bumper crop of cherries later in the summer.
22 April 2005 - We are slower this year. Good thing as I am having a net made to cover the
cherries to protect them from the flies that lay eggs in them.

There are several types of daffodils blooming in the garden. If anyone can tell me their
names, I would be grateful. These are in full bloom today (26 Apr 2006)

26 April 2006 - The rhododendron at the front of Emerald Lakes have yet to bloom, but the azelea on the south
side began blooming around the hot air exhaust outlet and are now in full bloom on the south
side. A bumblebee must have thought I was moving in on his territory.............he chased me
for several yards.
22 April 2005 A few of the azalea are out, but not yet in full bloom.

26 Apr 2006 - The forsythia are in full bloom both here and in town.
22 April 2005 The statement below is true this year too.
The forsythia are painting the town of Nelson with broad stokes of
yellow. Some of the plants are astounding in size.

26 Apr 2006 The first red tulip has opened at the front of the house where it gets full sun.
May 2005 I DID remember to plant more tulips and they were wonderful this year.
May 2004 The tulips are just beginning to open. I must remember to plant
more for next year.

These purple beauties were volunteers from last years plants.

Talk about the volunteer spirit!

A cherry tree...........now covered with tiny cherries.....are they edible?---2005 And yes,
they were edible and I used them to garnish plates as well.

The azelea n the south side.

And then the orange rhods on the north side bloomed.

And more "jewels" came tumbling out....................

The rubies of the garden.
