Shop for unique, fine quality handmade items at the many art shops in town

Rent a canoe or kayak and explore Kootenay Lake

Take a tour of Nelson Brewing Company, home of the best microbrewed beer in BC

SPRING EVENTS - Nelson is absolutely gorgeous in the spring. For those of you who are spring-deprived, you should consider visiting this area when your area is still getting snow. The flowers here are exquisite and we may get rain, but not snow. In mid-May, the Garden Festival was held on Baker Street. Below are a few pictures taken there.

Another mid-May event was the Well-Being Fair held near the Cottonwood Falls. The fair attracted a number of exhibitors.....teas, organic produce, jewelry, practitioners of the healing arts, massage therapists, and a number spiritual healers.

Visit Cottonwood Falls & the new Japanese Friendship Garden that has been created there by the Nelson-Shuzenji Friendship Society (Canadian/Japanese sister cities)

From the end of April to the end of summer on Saturdays from 9:30am to 3pm, be sure to visit the Cottonwood Falls Market where visitors will find a kaleidoscope of people, wares, and styles. You never know what you are going to find.....green eggs (shown below next to the asparagus), lovely stained glass, organic produce, handmade jewelry, collectibles, herbs, used clothing, second hand books and videos, fresh bread and pastries, handmade soaps, seeds, honey, original art, and much more. The Saturday Mary took the pictures below, there was music both inside the market and outside near the Japanese Friendship Garden.

Things to Do Outside Nelson

The area offers a number of attractions of historical interest including:

the ghost town at Sandon

the Outdoor Mining Museum at Silverton

the retired sternwheeler, SS Moyie at Kaslo

the Nikkei Internment Centre at New Denver

Other Recommended Activities Outside Nelson

Take the free ferry over to the other side of the lake and visit the studios of local artisans at Crawford Bay. Visitors can observe the artists at work and learn about the crafts of weaving, broom making, blacksmithing, copper enamel, and glass blowing. The following artist workshops are located in the small artist's hamlet of Crawford Bay on Highway 3A within walking distance of each other.

In August, come for the Jazz Festival at Kaslo

Watch the incredible spawning of the kokanee in Redfish or Kokanee Creeks in the fall. The kokanee are actually sockeye salmon that became landlocked in Kootenay Lake many years ago and were unable to return to the Pacific Ocean. Nelson, Kootenay Lake and the Silvery Slocan offer a multitude of recreational activities during all four seasons of the year.

Go fishing in Kootenay Lake (Kokanee Salmon to 3 lbs, Dolly Varden (bull trout) to 29 lbs and the famed Gerrard Rainbow up to 35 lbs)

Enjoy golf at any one of the uncrowded, first rate 18 hole courses in the area

Try out the lake or whitewater Kayaking

Test the world class mountain biking & hiking

Visit Taghum Trading between Castlegar Airport and Nelson; they have a fascinating collection of antiques, Asian art, and interesting furniture.
