The Town of Nelson & Area
Where is Nelson?

Nelson is located just north of Washington and Idaho (a bit west of Montana) in the southeastern corner of British Columbia, Canada in an area known generally as the Kootenays. Those seeking information on the area can search using "Kootenays" or "B.C. Rockies". The town sits on the west arm of  Kootenay Lake and is surrounded by the Selkirk Mountain Range. It is exactly half way between Calgary and Vancouver.

A unique mix

Nelson is a unique, small community which has become home to a remarkable mix of people. The town is a favorite destination for those wishing to enjoy the outdoors during all four seasons and a fulfilling place to live for those retiring, those wishing to escape the rat race of the cities, and those with occupational mobility who desire high quality of life in what is surely one of the most lovely settings on earth. The crystals, lilac and tie-die photograph below captures the essence of Nelson.............a gorgeous colorful and fragrant spring, alternative lifestyles, and the essence of the 60's.

Four season activities

The area around Nelson has numerous hiking and biking trails. Summer activities include fishing, kayaking, canoeing, sailing, horseback riding, rock climbing, etc. There are several golf courses in the vicinity including Granite Pointe, The Balfour Golf Club, and Kokanee Springs.

The area around Nelson also  provides challenging opportunities for winter activities including downhill and cross country skiing, snowmobiling, ice skating, dog sledding, snow shoeing, ice climbing, sleigh rides, and more. The winters are generally milder in temperature than the Alberta Rockies.

                                                  THINGS TO DO IN NELSON

SHOPPING - One of the all season recreations in Nelson is shopping. One might expect that to be dull in a town the size of Nelson, but such is not the case. In fact, just the opposite. In today's world of malls and cookie-cutter stores where the merchandise is predictable.....shopping in Nelson is anything but predictable. Many shops have lovely handmade items. The antiquing is wonderful. The shopkeepers are friendly. Mary took her camera downtown and took pictures of some of the shops. She thinks you will agree with her about the shopping.
Cottonwood Kitchens   - A unique kitchenware & home accessory store right on the main street of Nelson.

574 Baker Street,  Nelson, British Columbia, Canada.         Tel: 250/352-9777   Fax: 250/352-2611

As you will see from the photos, Cottonwood Kitchens carries a lot more than kitchen utensils. A wonderful store with lots of color and most everything you could ever want for the kitchen and for home decorating.

Kootenai Moon   -  Wicker, Rattan, artificial flowers, antiques, decorative items for the home.

737 Baker Street, Nelson, British Columbia, Canada      Tel: 250/352-5530

One of Emerald Lake's guests came back from Nelson with a beautiful pillow made from Japanese kimono material. We knew immediately where it had been purchased....Kootenai Moon. As you can see from the photographs, Kootenai Moon has some beautiful pieces both new and antique. Flowers for home decor, Nippon China, unique antique tea cups, beaded lamps, quality rattan & wicker furniture, vintage costume jewelry....Kootenai Moon has a wonderful selection.

Kootenay Exchange   -  Antiques, collectibles, bric-a-brac

338 Baker Street, Nelson, British Columbia, Canada      Tel: 250/352-6831

Kootenay Exchange is truly a fun place where you step back in time when you come through their door. You never know what you are going to find........a vintage typewriter, a wonderful set of silver, fascinating books, magazines, comics from the past, recent quality imports from Asia, and much more.

Little House Collectibles/ Serendipity Arts & Treasures                                  Antiques, collectibles, jewelry, books, Christmas ornaments.

460 Ward Street, Nelson, British Columbia, Canada        Tel: 250/352-7822

Another fun place that carries antiques, collectibles, and a variety of newer items of interest to the visitor to Nelson is Little House Collectibles partnered with Serendipity Arts & Treasures on Ward just off Baker Street. Mary found some old English pudding bowls here (just what she was looking for to prepare guest breakfasts) and a wonderful book on garnishes. There is something to interest everyone here.

Redfern House & Gallery   -  Original art, "house dressings", home decor items, framing.

203-402 Baker Street, Nelson, British Columbia, Canada    Tel: 250/352-1854

Redfern is a wonderful gallery on the second floor of the Nelson Trading Company on Baker Street (Nelson's main street). Have lunch in the interesting restaurant on the first floor, then wander up the stairs. By far the most wonderful things in Redfern are the fabric art created by the owner (the flowers and Russian grandmother below). She also does wonderful house dressings. Work by other artists is also on display and one can find a variety of colorful items of interesting design for the home.
